Thrillers

Thrillers are designed to hold audience interest by the use of a high degree of intrigue, mystery and suspense, and because Thrillers strive to induce anxiety in the viewer and keep them on the edge of their seat, people choose to watch them to experience excitement without risk.

Often the antagonists in these films make their actions personal to the protagonist: The tension and stakes are high (usually life and death) and there is a limited time period for the protagonist to investigate in order to find or trap the antagonist.  Frequently the protagonist is the final victim.

Importantly, throughout the story, the audience and the protagonist know the same amount of information at the same time.

The Thriller subgenres are usually determined by the situation but could also be subdivided into circumstances, such as; Serial Killers, Espionage, Person in Jeopardy, Erotic, Military, Political, Journalism, Medical, Legal, Psychological and Financial.

CONSPIRACY 

The protagonist makes an unexpected discovery or goes on a quest for knowledge about an attempted crime, a crime committed or a crime they suspect has been committed. The narrative often documents the unravelling of an unexpected consequence triggered by the protagonist.

CRIME       

Focuses on investigating criminal activity like murders, robberies and serial killers. Protagonist is usually a member of the police force or a PI.

FILM NOIR   

Often associated with the investigation of a crime, the plot and characters are usually dark and gritty, suggesting a world where danger lurks in the shadows. The protagonist is frequently a figure of authority depicted as a victim of circumstance. They regularly have a black and white visual theme.

MYSTERY  

The protagonist follows a trail of clues to solve a puzzle. The viewer is encouraged to try to solve the mystery along with the protagonist and the plot is filled with foreshadowing and red herrings. Essential details are often offered in a way that they seem unimportant.

PSYCHOLOGICAL     

Centred on the psyche of people, the plot frequently includes a threatening situation confronting the protagonist as a result of psychological instability. Time and again the story steers towards the journey of the protagonist conquering their own psychological struggles, (often a mental health disorder developed as a result of abuse as a child).

SUPERNATURAL 

Draws on elements of the paranormal; this includes phenomena from pop and folk culture, whose existence is beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding, , such as ghost stories, vampires and aliens.

SIXTH SENSE

 

TECHNO 

They include a disproportionate amount of technical details, using sophisticated technology as a differentiator. There is an emphasis on real-world or plausible near-future technology. Frequently the inner workings of technology and the mechanics of various specialist disciplines are examined, and the plot often turns on the particulars of that investigation.
